Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of a member of the jury and examine their junk. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
